Nora Atkinson, the museum’s Lloyd Herman Curator of Craft, is organizing the exhibition in collaboration with the Burning Man Project, the nonprofit organization responsible for producing the annual Burning Man event in Black Rock City, for facilitating and extending the culture that has issued from Burning Man into the wider world and for cultivating its principles reflecting an immediate, non-commercial and participatory culture. Burning Man is both a cultural movement and a thriving temporary city of more than 75,000 people that rises out of the dust for a single week each year in late summer in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. During that time, enormous experimental art installations are erected, some of which are then ritually burned to the ground. The desert gathering is a uniquely American hotbed of artistic ingenuity, driving innovation through its philosophies of radical self-expression, community participation, rejection of commodification and reverence for the handmade.

“The scale, the communal effort and the technical challenges inherent in creating works for the desert are part of what sets Burning Man apart from other art experiences,” said Stephanie Stebich, The Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “It is an amazingly creative laboratory where innovators go to play and to push the boundaries of their craft. Displaying the art of Burning Man at the Renwick is the latest example of our focus on new directions in craft and making.”

Large-scale installations—the artistic hallmark of Burning Man—will form the core of the exhibition. Individual artists and collectives featured in “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man” include Best, Chang, Cochrane, Five Ton Crane Arts Collective, Flatmo, FoldHaus Art Collective, Froschauer, Garlington and Bertotti, HYBYCOZO (Filipchuk and Beaulieu), Kuffner, Jones, Schardt, Villareal and Wilks. Best is creating a temple specifically commissioned for the Renwick’s Grand Salon, where the museum has presented its program of large-scale, immersive installations. Multiple installation sites have been selected throughout the neighborhood surrounding the museum for “No Spectators: Beyond the Renwick.” Confirmed sculptures to date include works by Jack Champion, HYBYCOZO and Kate Raudenbush.

The installations by perennial Burning Man artists Best, Garlington and Bertotti, Five Ton Crane and Jones were commissioned specifically for the Renwick’s presentation and will debut in the exhibition. “No Spectators” also marks the first public display of the works chosen for the exhibition by Chang, Froschauer and Kuffner.

“These artists represent the creative spirit of the contemporary maker movement and the ongoing importance of craft in the digital age,” Atkinson said. “They range from members of the art world, the tech community and beyond. Their work asks questions such as ‘what does art look like when it is separated from commercial value?’ and ‘why do we continue to make in the 21st century?’”

“No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man” also will feature costumes, jewelry, video and photography by artists and designers who participate in Burning Man, emphasizing the breadth of self-expression at the event. Archival materials and photographs from a condensed presentation of “City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man,” organized by the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, will trace the movement’s growth and bohemian roots.

So when I proudly posted photos of my new Lexus going through the wringer for the first time, I was utterly perplexed by his eloquent proclamation that “brushless no-paintfuck is a lie perpetrated by Big Flappywheel.”

As elucidating as Sam can be, I wasn’t really able to decipher the reasoning for his rage through all the sniffles. The carwash was brushless, the sign before the big, gaping maw of whirring machines said. All of these fears were old hat, spurred on by the myths of yesteryear. I would proudly set my Lexus into its gentle jaws, and be rid of the salty death chewing away at its metal underside. I was in the clear, so I thought.

Wrong. At least according to Paul Lamberty, who is responsible for “all automotive OEM and refinish coatings research and development within North America” for BASF, a top-tier supplier to the automotive industry.

In short, he knows about paint, and he knows about how it reacts to going through an automatic carwash.

“It’s like painting your car with a wet sandblaster,” he told me over the phone. The problem isn’t really the bristles, he noted. So it didn’t really matter whether or not my trip to the carwash was “brushless,” if it used bristles, or if it used giant floppy foamy things to gracefully slop away dirt.

The problem was all of the other cars and the stuff, or “media,” that clung to them from driving around all day. If the car before yours went on a dirt road, for instance, it would pull into the carwash just covered in mud and sand, he explained. And mud and sand are mostly made up of small bits of rock, including granite, which is extremely hard and abrasive.

That grit tends to stick onto the cleaning apparatus of the carwash, which after a while can start to almost be like sandpaper. “Some of those car washes, seriously, I’ve seen them where the brushes are gray to brown with dirt,” Lamberty said.

With the high speed of the cleaning machines and the high pressure of the water, all that dirt and grit is rubbed along the surface of your car on its way off the body. And with it, can come a little bit of your paint.

“I don’t care what car wash it is, if it rubs that media on the surface of the paint finish,” your paint can be stripped away, he said.

Eventually, your car could end up with what’s called a “spiderweb scratch,” which basically looks how it sounds.

Of course, if you’ve gone through the carwash a couple of times, all is not lost, Lamberty reassured me. I didn’t have to throw my brand-new-to-me beloved Lexus straight into a dumpster. Virtually all cars come with some level of scratch-resistant clear-coat straight from the factory, which should provide some level of protection. It’s really only a concern if you take it to a carwash repeatedly, over the course of a number of years. And if your paint is only deformed, and not stripped entirely, it’ll probably go back to normal once a little heat is applied to it, even from the sun.

And if you only plan on holding onto your car for a few years, it’s not something you’ll probably notice at all if you only go to the carwash every now and then. It’ll mostly start to look bad only after 10 years or more.

But, he cautioned, not all cars are the same. Most new cars come with an intermediate level of clear-coat protection, which should provide a good level of protection, he said. Some cars even have what he called “an advanced level of protection,” which “look as good coming out as they do coming in.”

So how do you know how good the protection is on your car? Well, that’s a much tougher question to answer, Lamberty said. Just because you get a high-end car doesn’t mean the manufacturer sprang for the higher-end paint protection at the factory. And even within a model, the level of protection can vary. Lamberty specifically pointed to the Ford F-150, which has different coatings depending on whether or not it was made at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly in Missouri, or Dearborn Truck Plant, in Michigan.

“Both meet the manufacturer specification, but they’re two different coatings,” he said.

If you need to get stuff like salt off your car, just hand wash it, Lamberty said. Use a lot of water to get all the grit off your car gently first, and then maybe use a soft clay and some towels to make sure everything shines nicely.

I then asked Lamberty if he’s ever taken his car to a car wash.

“Well, I’ve got 18 cars in my personal fleet,” he answered, “they range from a 1922 on up.” He considers a 1999 BMW M3 his baby, though.

A one or two piece leather suit is usually a relatively significant investment for most riders. The cost alone is the reason so many riders don’t own a suit, let alone a good quality jacket. The first thing you need to understand about motorcycle protective gear is that leather, whether cowhide or kangaroo skin, is always more protective than any type of textile (fabric) material currently available. Textile motorcycle gear is light weight and therefore comfortable, easy to get in and out of and breaths well, but there is a reason that no pro or amateur racer today is using textile gear on the track. You can really look at a leather suit as a 2nd, very thick skin, that is worn over your body. Sewn into this skin, in any serious leather suit, will be protective strategically placed armor for even more protection and then stretch panels and liners for comfort and cooling. In a crash situation, the leather protects from impact force that would otherwise tear your skin and sliding abrasion that would otherwise scrape your skin off. Impact armor is there to absorb as much of any impact energy as possible.

Higher end leather tends to be thinner and soft, therefore lighter and more comfortable for the rider, than heavy-weight leather. Thin, soft leather also takes less time for the suit to break-in than heavy weight leather. Thin leather, taken to the extreme may be comfortable, but can also no longer be fully protective, or if it is, is only a ‘one-crash’ garment.

Leather suits are typically offered in “one piece” and “two piece” varieties. One piece suits provide the best protection of the two types, due to the fact that there are less seams that can be subject to tearing during an impact situation. A two piece suit is slightly more versatile than a one piece suit, since it can be unzipped at the waist and be ridden as a jacket alone. Some manufacturers, such as Alpinestars, offer separate jackets and track pants that can be zipped together to make a full-type suit. Usually, however a riding jacket zipped to a riding pant does not zip all the way around the waist.

Increasingly, hi-tech suit manufacturers such as Alpinestars feature injection molded hard-plastic protection on their suits, combining leather protection with impact-absorbing hard body armor. This brings us to the topic of armor. Body armor is the part of the suit designed to protect the rider’s body from hard impact with the ground or other objects. Many leather riding jackets on the market today have no body armor in them at all. The other important part of a suit or jacket is the impact absorbing armor. Higher end suits today use “CE Approved” hard plastic and/or multi-layered memory foam armor inserts at these impact areas. Utilizing hard armor and various types of foam and padding, creates an energy absorbing zone through out the suit, protecting the rider during heavy direct impact crashes.

It takes a certain amount of skill, learned proprietary knowledge and craft to produce a suit will live up to the task.

Next to protection, what any suit or jacket spends most of its time doing is keeping you comfortable. Mainly, this means that the suit should fit you well, so that you will want to wear it. An overly heavy suit with no venting on a hot day, won’t be your first choice when you go to suit up for a day’s ride in the street. An overly uncomfortable suit will also have the affect of being a distraction to your riding when you are on the bike. You want your suit to fit as good as possible.

Sizing. Especially when ordering online, sizing questions are one of the first things on people’s minds. First time suit buyers are typically lost when it comes to trying on suits because they want the suit to fit perfectly the moment they try it on. A good fitting suit should be very snug on the few times of use. A perfectly fitting suit has few creases, baggy points and folds, yet is just snug enough to be a little tight on the rider. You shouldn’t be able to grab a hand full of leather easily and bunch it up in your hand if the suit is fitting well. The suit should fit as well as possible, like a second skin, tight to your body.

How to Properly Remove a Decal Or Sticker From Your Car Window

If you’ve recently purchased a used car in the past or know someone who has, you may have come across an unsightly sticker or decal left on one or more of the vehicle’s windows. While the original owner may have found this auto accessory as an attractive addition to your ride, chances are you don’t feel the same way. Removing decals like these can be a nerve-wracking task, especially if the decal has been sitting on the window for multiple years, but the right tools and procedures will make the process much simpler. The good news is that when it comes to streak free and smudge free windows in your car, it is more about the technique and the cloth, than it is about finding “the best” window cleaner.

Start by gathering the items you’ll need to take off your car’s decal most effectively. These tools include a commercial razor blade, a window cleaner and a razor blade holder for added safety if you can locate one. Both the razor blade and holder can usually be found at a minimal cost at your local hardware or automotive store. The razor blades are usually sold in packs, but some specialty stores sell them individually as well. Standard household glass cleaner is all you really need to get the decal or sticker off of your automobile’s window, but if you have the opportunity you may want to invest in a small can of commercial foaming glass cleaner.

After you’ve collected your materials, spray the decal with glass cleaner and let it soak for a few seconds. Once the decal has had a chance to absorb some of the glass cleaner, begin to slowly peel away the decal on any of its corners. For maximum effect, be sure to introduce the blade to the sticker at an angle, somewhere around 45 degrees. Doing so will give the razor blade a better opportunity to get underneath the automotive decal. Make sure you don’t put any more force on the razor blade than absolutely necessary as swapping your decal for fresh scratches is not the best of trades.

If you find a decal or sticker on your vehicles back windshield, exercise extreme caution before attempting to remove it. Those black horizontal lines that run across the width of your back window are responsible for delivering heat to the rear windshield of your car, truck or SUV. Damaging any of these small coils could cause permanent damage to the defrost feature of your back window, so try to avoid contact between the razor blade and these heating elements at all cost.

If you find a decent sized corner of the sticker peeled off of the window, attempt to remove it the rest of the way by hand. Utilizing the razor blade as little as possible will help reduce the chances of accidental damage to your vehicle’s expensive glass. Thin or especially old decals may break into pieces when removed by hand. If you find this to be the case with your decal, simply proceed as normal using the razor blade until the automotive decal has been removed completely from your car’s window.

Once you have removed the offending sticker from your car, truck or SUV, you may find a sticky residue left behind. If so, gently chisel away at the remaining residue with your razor blade at the same 45 degree angle you used to peel the decal away. Once the decal and any leftover residue has been removed from your vehicle’s exterior, use some glass cleaner to give your window one last polishing and wipe away any remaining cleaner with a paper towel.

Your car windows are now completely free of foreign decorations left by the previous owner. You may choose to leave your windows bare or accent them with attractive automotive decals of your choosing.
